Non-Credit Courses
- History It is believed that the Sustainable Farming Program at Central Carolina Community College was born out of a need to address the issues of the farming community within Chatham County and the surrounding Piedmont region of NC. The program was initiated by local growers at the time of 1996, this program swiftly developed into a unique partnership of community members, farmers, Central Carolina Community College, NC Cooperative Extension Service, Carolina Farm Stewardship Association, American Livestock Breeds Conservancy, R.E.A.L. Enterprises NC A&T University and NC State University.
- The Program: This program employs a an innovative approach to teaching through together highly successful agriculturalists as the primary instructors. The classes are interactive with excursions to local farms and associated companies and are planned to accommodate students who are working. Land Lab Land Lab has been developed to serve as a demonstration and research facility to demonstrate sustainable agricultural practices. It also serves as an outdoor classroom to provide practical instruction in horticulture as well as other disciplines of agriculture.
- Students are able to enroll in courses on a range of fields, including medicinal Herbs organic vegetable Production and Sustainability Cut Flower production and Sustainable Poultry Production, as well as Biofuels as well as alternative energy sources and sustainable construction. - Choose, design and manage the right technologies and structures required to run a successful small-scale farm operation.
- Make a business strategy for a future or current farm venture that includes particulars like the entire budgets for the farm and the enterprise and marketing strategies that are appropriate for the level of skill and scale of the farm.
- Write and present a marketing strategy that is appropriate for organic and sustainable farming within the Southeast.
- Write down the obstacles to sustainability within our current agricultural system orally as well as in writing.
